South America is an extraordinary continent, full of geographical and cultural contrasts. In every way, it is more diverse and spectacular than all the others. With an area of approximately 17.8 million square kilometers, it is the fourth largest continent, after Asia, Africa and North America. But, like none of the others, it has high mountains, dense tropical forests, arid deserts, glacial areas and vast plains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relief and geology<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

South America is dominated by the Andes mountain range, which runs the entire length of the continent from north to south along the west coast. These mountains are among the highest in the world, with peaks exceeding 6,000 meters, including Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, at 6,961 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the east, the continent is characterized by vast plains and plateaus. The Amazon Basin, located in the northern part of the continent, is the largest tropical forest in the world and is home to incredible biodiversity. South America is rich in water resources. The Amazon River is the second longest river in the world, after the Nile, and has the largest drainage basin. The continent also has numerous lakes, the most famous of which is Lake Titicaca, located on the border between Peru and Bolivia, which is the highest navigable lake in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The climate of South America varies considerably from one region to another. In the north, the climate is tropical, with high temperatures and high humidity. In the south, the climate is more temperate, with cold winters and hot summers.
