RO: Albena (Албена) is a tourist resort on the Black Sea coast in northeastern Bulgaria, located 12 km from Balchik and 30 km from Varna. Varna International Airport serves the resort of Albena.
Built specifically as a tourist resort, Albena has a unified and unique architectural style. Most of the hotels, located right on the beach, have maximum exposure to the sun and direct access to the beach. Albena is located near other tourist, cultural and commercial centers, while still managing to preserve its natural habitat. Although built on empty land in the 1960s, today it looks like a small city, with a center, streets and squares, and even a public transport network — dedicated trains that run according to a set schedule on the city streets.
The resort has a beach 5 km long, 150 m wide, with fine sand; the sea water being clean, calm and warm. The water depth does not exceed 1.6 meters at a distance of 100–150 meters from the shore. Visitors can opt for one of 43 modern hotels (between two and four stars) that offer around 20,000 places to stay. Most hotels have swimming pools.
The name of the resort comes from the name of a character in a short story by the Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov. Albena is a Bulgarian female given name.
