According to the Trade Register, in Romania there are 1214 companies whose object of activity is 5811 - book publishing. Over 1000 of these are based in Bucharest. In the other counties, the number of commercial companies that have (also) this object of activity is between 4 (in Tulcea, Teleorman, Ialomița, Vrancea and Vaslui) and 154 - in Cluj. In the counties of Iași, Bihor, Ilfov, Brașov, Timiș, in that order, the number of registered publishers drops from almost a hundred to 50.
At the national level, companies with publishing activities represent 0.04% of the total of commercial companies in Romania. According to TopFirme.com, they have a turnover of 146 million euros and only 2180 employees. The annual profit of the industry is 26 million euros, which means almost 12,000 euros of annual profit per employee. The book publishing activity has an average annual return per employee twice the average of all economic branches.
The top 10 publishers/publishing groups make over a third of the industry's turnover and have a quarter of the employees. The oldest companies on the top are the publishing houses Humanitas and Paralela 45, registered in 1994. The most recent is Grupul Editorial Litera, registered in 2019, but which continues the activity of a publishing house that appeared in 1989.
The 20 most active publishers on the market are based in Bucharest – 16, Iași – 2, Pitești – 1 and Cluj-Napoca – 1.
