Map of the main roads in Bulgaria

The main road in Bulgaria is the north-south highway that passes through the capital Sofia and connects Vidin - on the border with Romania, to northern Greece. The east-west roads are of rank 2 and connect Ruse/Giurgiu to Varna, on the coast, or make connections between Serbia or Macedonia and the Bulgarian coast / Burgas / or to Bulgaria's tripartite border with Greece and Turkey.

The road that runs along the Black Sea coast is of special interest to Romanians, as it provides direct access from Mangalia/Vama Veche to all the major coastal resorts of Bulgaria – Kavarna, Balcic, Varna, Biala, Nesebar, Pomorie, Sozopol. Also, the coastal road can be used by Romanians to reach Turkey by car - Istanbul, Izmir, Bodrum, etc. Thus, the road to Turkey is much shorter, although it does not have the same road quality, compared to the standard access via Ruse-Plevna- Sofia- Plovdiv/Stara Zagora - Edirne.

For skiable areas in Bulgaria, the corridor that crosses the valleys of the Balkan Mountains between Sofia and Stara Zagora must be accessed. But, obviously, there are also shorter ways, even if they ensure to a lesser extent the speed regime and road safety - either on the coast, through Burgas, or on the intermediate north-south corridor, through Velico Tîrnovo.
