A selection of the most popular destinations in Romania for foreign tourists includes, first of all, Bucharest. The recreation area in the old center of Bucharest, even if it is not updated to the standards of modern tourism, attracts a large number of tourists. Likewise, the new center of the city – the House of the People and the Boulevard with fountains – represents a tourist attraction for the novelty/strangeness of the communist palatial architecture. The cultural sights - museums, theaters, galleries - are visited as much by foreign tourists as by Romanian ones.
After Bucharest, the most popular destination is Prahova Valley and Făgăraș. The old royal castles, Peleș and Bran, together with the medieval fortresses of Râșnov, Brașov and Făgăraș constitute the main attraction areas in the center of the country. In the same region, a new tourist attraction is the Liberty Bears sanctuary.
Also in Transylvania, the old fortresses of Sighișoara, Sibiu, Alba Carolina and Hunedoara continue their medieval fascination, while the Cluj area adds tourist attractions such as Salina Turda and Electric Castle. The cities of Timișoara and Oradea, with an ambitious program to restore the architectural heritage, are other tourist attractions.
In the old Kingdom, the monasteries in the north of Moldavia, particularly picturesque, are, however, outside the major tourist circuits, as are the monasteries in the north of Oltenia, such as Tismana. However, even in these cases, the number of foreign tourists is increasing from year to year.
Two other important destinations are on the Danube. At Cazane, a place that until recently prevented navigation due to the rocky bottom, the Portile de Fier Power Plant created a large intramontane reservoir, with a particularly spectacular landscape. Also on the Danube, at its discharge into the Black Sea, the Delta is one of the most important destinations for nature lovers from all over Europe.
